Love Our Children NC Celebrates 4 Years of Advocacy for the End of Exclusionary Discipline in the NHCS

Love Our Children NC was founded in March 2021 by two long-time educators, Veronica McLaurin-Brown and Peter Rawitsch. They have advocated for the end of out-of-school suspensions for 5, 6, and 7-year-olds for minor offenses, ending the use of seclusion rooms, and the over-all reduction of K-2 suspensions. Their advocates and supporters have spoken at every New Hanover County Board of Education meeting for past 48 months.

This month they are celebrating their success in all three areas with a 28 Days of Love campaign. Each day they are highlighting a different local, State, or National organization that supports their work. They have received endorsements from groups like NHC NAACP, Every Child NC, and the Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint. McLaurin-Brown said, “A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported Love Our Children in our mission to end exclusionary discipline practices. Your continued support will help us end out-of-school suspensions and their harmful effects on our children.”

Love Our Children NC is holding a celebratory Press Conference on Saturday, February 15th at 11:00am outside the New Hanover County Board of Education Center located at 1805 S. 13th St. Speakers include representatives from Love Our Children NC, NHC NAACP, National Black Leadership Caucus, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation. The public is invited to attend.
